IOWA CITY, IOWA – The Northern Iowa wrestling team (1-3, 0-0 WWC) lost to the No. 1-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes (5-0, 1-0 B10) by a score of 38-4 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena Thurs., Dec. 8. Sophomore Ryan Loder provided the only victory for the Panthers in this dual match, improving his perfect season record to 16-0.

No. 6-ranked Loder (184) put UNI up 4-0 after recording a 13-2 major decision over Iowa’s Vinnie Wagner in the night’s opening match. Loder now holds a 16-0 record on the season.

From that point, the Hawkeyes went on to win the remainder of the matches, mostly with major decisions. Iowa tallied five major decisions, as well as two regular decisions and a pin.

At 157-pounds, Panther junior David Bonin gave the weight class’ No. 2-ranked wrestler a close match. However, Iowa’s Derek St. John pulled away with the 3-1 decision, as he overcame a mid-match injury.

Iowa’s Mike Evans (165) closed out the night with the match’s only fall, pinning sophomore Riley Banach in 1:10.

The Panthers forfeited their 174-pound match.

A crowd of 7,078 was on hand to witness the dual match.

The Panthers will be out of action until Dec. 29-30 when they travel to Chicago for the Midlands Championships.

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA – The University of Northern Iowa wrestling squad hoisted two champions at the UNI Open Saturday. David Bonin captured the 157-pound title, and Ryan Loder continued his undefeated season, claiming the 184-pound championship.

Bonin capped off his title run with an 11-6 decision over South Dakota State’s Nick Flynn. The junior was 5-0 at the end of the tournament. His victories included two decisions, a major decision, a technical fall, and a pin, improving his overall season record to 14-3.

Loder cruised through the 184-pound bracket, finishing the UNI Open with a 13-3 major decision over Mitchell Schultz of Upper Iowa. The sophomore racked up two pins and a technical fall in addition to his major decision. Loder is now 15-0 this season.

The Panthers had at least one wrestler place in every weight division. Cruse Aarhus (125) was runner-up in his bracket. Jarrett Jensen (157), Riley Banach (165), and Cody Caldwell (174) claimed third place in their respective brackets.

UNI wrestling will resume its dual schedule this coming Thurs., Dec. 8, as the Panthers travel to Iowa City to face the No. 1-ranked Hawkeyes.

University of Northern Iowa wrestler Ryan Loder was named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week for his performance at the Northeast Duals this past weekend.

Loder (184) was the lone Panther to go undefeated this past weekend as UNI competed at the Northeast Duals in New York. The sophomore’s most notable victory of the weekend was a 3-1 decision over No. 9-ranked Ben Bennett of Central Michigan. While facing 12th-ranked Maryland, Loder provided all of UNI’s six points for the dual, pinning Ty Snook in 6:18. He then ended the day with a 13-2 major decision over Bucknell’s Jamie Westwood as the Panthers defeated the Bison 27-12. Loder improved his overall season record to 11-0.

Loder, a native of Granite Bay, Calif., has earned WWC Wrestler of the Week honors four times during his career thus far. He was one of three national qualifiers for UNI last season and was also named the WWC “Freshman of the Year.”

PREVIOUS PERFORMANCE AT HAROLD NICHOLS
The last time UNI Wrestling competed at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open was Nov. 15, 2008. Eight Panthers competed at the event, including three members of UNI’s current roster: Cruse Aarhus, David Bonin and Blayne Beale. Bonin (165) placed fifth in his weight class as a freshman.

RETURNING TWO NCAA QUALIFIERS
Two NCAA Championship qualifiers return to the Panther lineup this season. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Loder (184) was one win away from achieving All-American status. Meanwhile, junior David Bonin (157) bowed out in the third round of consolation matches.

FIVE CHAMPIONS EMERGE AT LORAS OPEN
UNI wrestling boasted five individual championships and one runner-up finish at the Loras Open Nov. 5. Champions include freshmen Adam Perrin (141), Jarrett Jensen (157), Blaize Cabell (197) and Cody Krumwiede (285). Kyle Lux and Taylor Berger shared the 165-pound title. Freshman Tanner Hiatt (149) took home runner-up honors.

PROMISING PANTHER RECRUITS
This year’s Panther squad will feature many new faces. Of the 28 wrestlers on the preseason roster, 15 are true freshmen or first-year transfers. Notable recruits include JuCo National Champion Joe Colon (133), who trans- ferred from Iowa Central, as well as Iowa’s 2011 “Mr. Wrestler” and Waverly native, Cody Caldwell (174).

A YEAR UNDER HIS BELT
Doug Schwab enters his second season as head coach. In his debut season, Schwab led UNI Wrestling to its first 12-win season since 2003. He held assistant coach positions at Iowa and Virginia Tech before joining the Panthers. During his own college wrestling days, Schwab was a three-time All-American and Big Ten champion at Iowa. He won the 1999 NCAA Title at 141 pounds.

DUBUQUE, IOWA – UNI wrestling boasted five individual championships and two runner-up finishes at the Loras Open Saturday. Champions include freshmen Adam Perrin (141), Jarrett Jensen (157), Kyle Lux (165), Blaize Cabell (197) and Cody Krumwiede (285). Freshmen Tanner Hiatt (149) and Taylor Berger (165) took home runner-up honors.

Eleven Panthers competed at the open tournament unaffiliated. Sophomore transfers Austin Gelbach (174) and Onni Prestidge (197) both competed in the “Gold” Division, while freshmen Perrin, Kwinn Kraft (149), Hiatt, Jensen, Lux, Berger, Elliot Wirkler (174), Cabell and Krumwiede competed in the “Silver” Division.

Perrin ended the day with a 5-0 record on his way to claim the 141-pound championship, topping Iowa Western Community College’s Aaron Reynolds in the final by decision, 12-6.

Jensen also cruised through five competitors on his way to claim the 157-pound title. He defeated Dallas Houchins of Grand View University by major decision, 13-4, in his championship match.

Lux and Berger both qualified for the 165-pound championship match and opted not to compete in the final match against each other. Lux was awarded first-place honors as Berger was given the official default.

Cabell won four matches as he took home the 197-pound title. His final match resulted in a 10-3 decision over Loras College’s Ryan Ward.

Heavyweight Krumwiede boasted an impressive three-consecutive pins on his way to the 285-pound championship. His final match was won by a 4-3 decision over Chris Lopez of the University of Illinois.

The Panthers were a combined 31-10 at the Loras Open, which marked the first official competition of UNI’s 2011-12 season.

UNI will return to action Sun., Nov. 13, at the Harold Nichols Open in Ames, Iowa.
